Kennedy says numbers won't slow her campaign in prosecutor's race 10/20/2006 By Jon Murray The Indianapolis Star
Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi has a comfortable, 16-point lead on his Democratic challenger with about two weeks to go before the election, according to a new poll commissioned by WTHR (Channel 13).
Fifty-one percent of likely voters said they would choose the Republican incumbent, while 35 percent said they would vote for Melina Kennedy, Indianapolis' former deputy mayor.
The poll of 600 likely Marion County voters has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
The Kennedy campaign's own polls give her confidence that a victory is possible, she said Thursday.
In early September, it was Brizzi who expressed skepticism about the results of a major poll.
That poll, by Research 2000 for WISH (Channel 8), showed Kennedy slightly ahead of Brizzi -- 43 percent to 42 percent -- but well within the 5-point margin of error in a poll of 400 likely voters.
"We're not going to rest on those numbers," Brizzi said of this week's poll results, which he added were just a snapshot. "We're going to continue running like we're five points behind."
Twelve percent said they were not sure whom they would support, and 2 percent said they would vote for someone else or would not vote in that race.
Kennedy and Brizzi have raised $3 million or more in a hard-fought campaign that has filled the airwaves with increasingly combative TV ads. More up-to-date financial figures should be available today, the deadline for the campaigns to turn in reports showing contributions and expenses through Oct. 13.
The candidates have debated three times this month, with a fourth scheduled to be broadcast live at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28 on WTHR.
Experience has become the key focus in the race. Brizzi points to Kennedy's lack of criminal courtroom experience every chance he gets. Kennedy focuses on conviction rates under Brizzi that trail those of his predecessor, Republican Scott Newman.
