Brizzi fights back in latest ad 10/4/2006 Roger Harvey/Eyewitness News
Marion County - Chances are you have seen the commercials on the air in the Marion County prosecutor's race. Republican prosecutor Carl Brizzi and Democratic challenger Melina Kennedy are spending thousands of dollars on TV ads trying to sway voters. The commercials are bombarding voters with messages about what's wrong with the other candidate.
It appears Marion County prosecutor Carl Brizzi has heard enough criticism from his opponent, Democrat Melina Kennedy.
"Melina Kennedy's been talking about my cases lately trying to attack my record as prosecutor," he says in his latest ad.
In the strongly worded television ad, Brizzi speaks directly to voters about Kennedy: "Melina Kennedy has never filed a charge, never tried a case, never put a criminal in jail. The bottom line Melina Kennedy has zero experience going after the bad guys," he states.
Brizzi's maintained throughout the campaign, he's the most experienced. Kennedy is on the airwaves with a television ad talking about his term as prosecutor.
"Carl Brizzi is attacking Melina Kennedy. He says her experience is an issue. Maybe that is because he is trying to hide from his experience as prosecutor," says Kennedy's latest ad.
The Kennedy ad claims people are not as safe. "The more experience Carl Brizzi gets, the less safe our neighborhoods become," her ad states.
Butler University political science associate professor Terri Jett says both Brizzi and Kennedy are trying to get the upper hand when it comes to fighting crime.
"They both are trying to speak to the violence and who is going to be toughest and who is going to prevent repeat offenders from coming out into the community and creating more havoc. They are trying to convince the public of their effectiveness in that position," Jett said.
Jett says there is a danger negative ads can backfire. "The public is going to be bombarded with these ads and I just hope they don't go too negative because that actually traditionally turns off the public from even participating."
While Brizzi and Kennedy do have positive commercials about their own campaigns, political insiders say it's likely voters will see more unfavorable messages about their opponent.
One of the best ways for voters to make an informed decision is to hear from the candidates themselves in a debate format. WTHR and the Indianapolis Star will carry a 30-minute live debate here in our studios on Saturday October 28th at 7:30 pm.
