Fraternal Order of Police Endorse Political Candidates

The Fraternal Order of Police cast its vote so-to-speak putting out a list of candidates it's endorsing. The group doesn't back Sheriff Frank Anderson saying his opponent Steve Davis will work better with law enforcement officers under consolidation.

It's also backing Prosecutor Carl Brizzi saying he has a solid prosecution record and the group said his opponent Melina Kennedy lacks experience.

The F.O.P. says from Sheriff, to County Clerk, to County Recorder all have a role in keeping you safe.

Patty Moore sits outside a lot but she often sees boarded up windows and abandoned homes in her east side neighborhood.

"For several years right across the street from me I seen drug dealers on the porch and I went over there and ran them off myself," Moore said.

F.O.P. President Vince Huber showed 24 Hour News 8 a list of candidates the they voted to endorse. They are people he said will get rid of such crime magnets.

"Those people that we have endorsed I think will look at criminal justice issues and public safety issues and make good decisions," Huber said.

The F.O.P. says preventing crime doesn't just fall on the hands of police officers and sheriff's deputies. The F.O.P. said a key position is County Recorder, the recorder keeps records of property owners.

The F.O.P. is endorsing Angela Cypress for the job. She plans to appoint a liaison who will directly correspond with law enforcement.

"Identifying those property owners of abandoned and vacant properties, breeding grounds for criminals and criminal activity," Cypress said.

"I don't think it's necessary to create a new position or liaison. I think it the job of the recorder to sit down with law enforcement as the head of the documents that would be required," Cypress's opponent Julie Voorhies said.

Voorhies said she wasn't given a fair opportunity for F.O.P. endorsement considering the group never even interviewed her. They only mailed her a survey.

Patty just wants her neighborhood cleaned up, "It's dangerous out here. It's not safe to have your kids out in the yard."

On the list of candidates the F.O.P. endorses the majority are Republican. But F.O.P. President Huber says the group merely picked the people right for the job regardless of political party or where they stood on police consolidation.
